2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review

While you can get more power for less money, it definitely earns a test drive.

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class has always been an attractive convertible with a fun drive. For 2001, Mercedes-Benz adds the SLK320, a V-6 version that offers more horsepower. Obviously, that makes the car even more attractive.

Buyers can also choose a six-speed manual that gives the driver more to do and puts her in control of the car.

The 2001 SLK-Class comes with plenty of standard features regardless of which version you buy. Putting up the automatic retractable top makes you feel like it’s a hardtop. Press a button and you enjoy a convertible 30 seconds later.

Mercedes-Benz’s update makes the SLK-Class (particularly the SLK320) a convertible that you should definitely include on your short list.

The Range

Body Styles: convertible

Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder, 3.2-liter V-6

What’s New

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class has a sporty look that attracts buyers of all ages. The optional sport package makes it look even cooler by adding five-spoke wheels, metal plate door sills, 17-inch tire treads, and a more muscular body. With or without the sport package, though, you get a few nods of approval on the road.

Still, the 2001 SLK-Class doesn’t stand out so much that it attracts thieves.

The SLK-Class has plenty of luxury features that help make it one of the best you can buy. Features include a six-speaker Bose stereo system, air-conditioning, interior air filtration, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, and leather just about everywhere you look (on the doors, dash, steering wheel, and shift knob, not to mention the leather seats).

The best feature in the 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class though, its retractable roof, makes you feel like you’re sitting in the cabin of a regular hardtop.

It even blocks outside noise very well. Push a button, and you get to enjoy a convertible’s fun attitude within 30 seconds. Unlike some convertibles, you don’t have to get out of your seat to put the top up or down.

It comes fully automated for your comfort and convenience.

Performance Handling

The Mercedes-Benz SLK230 comes with a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that offers 190 hp. Buyers looking for more power should check out the SLK320. It has a 3.2-liter V-6 with 215 hp.

Both engines seem quite fun and offer plenty of rev for entertainment. The V-6, though, proves notably more enjoyable thanks to its increased horsepower.

Both versions of the 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class come standard with a six-speed manual transmission that delivers power to the rear wheels. A five-speed automatic also remains available. If you want maximum fun, though, you’d never consider an automatic when you could have manual.

The 2001 SLK-Class has precise steering that adds to the driving experience. A well-damped suspension offers a smooth ride that responds well to the road’s inconsistencies. Unfortunately, rather weak exhaust system hampers the driving experience.

Still, it offers a fun drive, if not particularly exciting.

The 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class comes with a ton of safety features, including electronic brake force distribution, traction control, stability control, and four-wheel ABS. You also get emergency braking assist, dual front side-mounted airbags, and front seat belt pretensioners.

The IIHS only performs rear crash protection and head restraint crash tests. The SLK-Class earns a Marginal rating, the second lowest of four ratings.
