2000 Pontiac Montana Review

Roomy, peppy, and full of plastic.

Reviewed by Automotive on 8/2/2000

The 2000 Pontiac Montana was given its nameplate in 1999. Since that time, the Montana has proven itself a worthy economy rival to other vans on the market. The Montana is marketed as the sportiest of the front-drive minivan models offered by Pontiac. The Montana is very closely related to the Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette, differing only in exterior molding and features. However, the Montana does give a peppy ride thanks to its redesigned engine.

In fact, the ride with the Montana was so impressive its underpinnings were used to create two sport utility vehicles: the 2001 Pontiac Aztek and the 2002 Buick Rendezvous.

What’s New

Pontiac Montana

The 2000 Pontiac Montana has a slightly different look from other minivans in the GM family. Lower body cladding is different from other models, and the two-port front grille is unique.

The Montana comes with a standard two-tone exterior paint with the lower cladding painted a charcoal color. Taupe or silver lower cladding is also available as an optional feature. Standard equipment includes fog lights, power heated mirrors, rear window defroster, sliding driver’s side door, tinted glass, a rear window wiper, and daytime running lights.

Optional equipment includes a camper/towing package, a keyless entry system, self-leveling suspension alloy wheels, roof rack, privacy glass, and an OnStar system.

The interior of the 2000 Pontiac Montana is both one of its strengths and its weakness. The best thing about the Montana is its available seating options. Both models come equipped with bucket seats for the driver and passenger.

Standard is a seven-passenger setup with a two-seat bench in the second row and a third seat bench. An optional eight-passenger model replaces the two seats in the center row for three bucket seats. The rear bench is also replaced with bucket seats.

Although it is great being able to haul so many passengers, the third row seats are pretty uncomfortable, especially for adults. Also, the flip fold bench seats are very uncomfortable and offer little leg and side support, making long rides very uncomfortable. The interior has a lot of cheap plastic, which will easily turn off many buyers. It is not uncommon for cracked or broken piece to be present on used vehicles.

Standard interior features include bucket seats, cloth upholstery, cruise control, power steering, tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, intermittent windshield wipers, power door locks, and an AM/FM cassette audio system. Optional features include a child seat, keyless entry system, overhead console, six- and eight-passenger seating options, leather seating, power driver’s seat, power front passenger’s seat, steering wheel audio controls, and power sliding doors.

Performance Handling

The 2000 Pontiac Montana comes equipped with a 3.4-liter, V-6 engine that produces 185 horsepower. It is the same engine that is equipped in all other GM minivans on the market during that period. This year, the engine was redesigned for better durability, and it produces less noise that previously; a problem many Montana owners complained about in the past. Consumers will be impressed by the spunky output of the V-6. The Montana really moves when prodded.

Unfortunately, even with the added refinement the engine can be a bit noisy. Also, handling isn’t the best. However, these small glitches are not enough to keep the Montana from being a perfectly acceptable alternative to other vans on the market.
