2000 Isuzu Vehicross Review

A techno-styled vehicle moon-buggy junk.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS started as a radical concept vehicle that was unwrapped during a motor show back in 1993. The sport utility vehicle rolled out of the production line on a limited run to test the market in Japan. The distinct look enchanted the market.

What’s New

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS installs an air-conditioner as standard equipment. Mew body finishes roll out, and 16-inch wheels are replaced by 18-inch wheels.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS was designed to impress. Some undeniably noticeable elements of its design are the side black cladding made of polypropylene and the snake-eye headlamps. It also accents the big wheel wells that house bigger and fatter tires. The unpainted panels are scratch and chip resistant making it ideal for off-roading.

Its unique stance is highlighted by the fuel-filler door that looks borrowed from an airplane, rear spoiler on the roof, and a black insert on its hood. The cargo door houses the spare tire resulting in a huge bulge as seen on the outside.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS has a good 8.5 inches of ground clearance. It is roughly 67 inches tall measured up to its haunches. It also rolled out with a limited Ironman Triathlon special edition, which comes with a white body finish showered with appropriate decals on the tailgate and near the C-pillar.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS provides sport bucket seats by Recaro for the front cabin occupants. It is hugged by black and red leather, and the bucket seats provide a good amount of support to keep the occupants in place. The rear seat has a reclining feature and a 50/50 split configuration. It is quite comfortable at the back with enough space for some leg and head clearance.

The layout though is visually confining, but the door panels crafted from faux carbon-fiber add to the visual appeal. The high-contrast tachometer and speedometer also nice visual treats at night.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS’ designers may have prioritized the looks instead of function since it barely has storage space. The buttons of the radio also are a bit small, the door handle inside is awkward to hold, and the tailgate cannot be opened without using the key. Another big issue is the rearward visibility; the spare tire obstructs the rear window, which is too small to start with.

The Japanese release solved this problem by installing a tiny camera on the rear monitored through a screen on the dash. The side mirrors are also attached to the fenders and not to the doors. The Ironman Triathlon special edition comes with leather treatment for the front seats and come embossed with the Ironman Triathlon label.

Performance Handling

Although the 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS looks like a speedster after a walk around, it is surprising to find out that it weighs 3955 pounds. Under the hood, a 3.5-liter V-6 power plant can give 215 horses. This engine is linked to the four-speed automatic gearbox and the four-wheel-drive Torque-on-Demand.

The four-wheel-drive system is controlled by a computer that automatically distributes power to wheels to provide more traction. Despite the potent engine, it takes nine seconds to go from a standstill to 60 mph. This is not a slow vehicle, but it will not be able to keep up with its competitions in its segment.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS‘ suspension has a big room for improvement. It has a rough ride when driving off-road but is quite stable and solid on smoother roads. The steering is crisp, responsive, and sharp.

It also is stable when negotiating sharp turns. The all-wheel-drive system also contributes to the stability of the vehicle. It constantly monitors the speeds of the axles and how braking is applied and throttled.

It then redistributes the power to the wheels in order to provide the best grip.

The 2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS comes standard with four-wheel anti-lock brake system and front airbags for the occupants in front.
