2000 Chrysler Sebring Review

Affordable and upscale drop top.

Reviewed by Automotive on 9/11/2000

Overview

The 2000 Chrysler Sebring Coupe allows for four occupants, offers good performance, and looks good. It uses the same design as the Mitsubishi Galant and comes from Mitsubishi’s plant in Illinois. However, it doesn’t look like the Mitsubishi sedan.

The Sebring convertible derives from the Chrysler Cirrus sedan.

The Range

Body Styles: two-door coupe, two-door convertible

Engines: 2.5-liter V-6

Transmissions: four-speed automatic

What’s New

The 2000 Chrysler Sebring adds more standard equipment. The LX trim fabric has been updated, and ice silver debuts as a new color.

Exterior

The LXi, which serves as the more expensive model of the 2000 Chrysler Sebring, boasts among its standard features automatic night/day side mirrors, remote entry, and the HomeLink home-security system.

Consumers get 10 colors to choose from, to go along with exterior features such as 15-inch wheels, power brakes, power heated mirrors, a keyless entry system, a lighted entry system, a rear window defroster, remote trunk release, a power convertible roof, and intermittent windshield wipers.

The JX measures 70.1 inches wide, 54.8 inches high, and 192.6 inches long. It clears the ground at 6.1 inches and sits on a wheelbase of 106 inches. It has a curb weight of 3440 pounds.

Interior

The LXi features a compass, a CD player, leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and six-way power seating standard.

The lower-level LX includes plenty of standard features as well, such as power windows, air-conditioning, and a power sunroof. The front passenger seat slides forward, leaving more room for rear passengers. The split rear seatback also folds for additional cargo space in the 2000 Chrysler Sebring.

The JX Convertible base model includes vinyl bucket seating in either agate or camel. It features a center console, a tachometer, power steering with a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and air-conditioning. Passengers can listen to an AM/FM/cassette audio system or upgrade to a CD audio system with a disc changer.

Cloth seating also remains available as an upgrade.

The JX offers 44.7 inches of rear hip room, 37 inches of rear headroom, 35.2 inches of rear legroom, and 49 inches of rear shoulder room.

Performance Handling

The LXi has a taut suspension that includes a rear stabilizer bar and four-wheel disc brakes. The LX uses a more conservative touring-tuned independent double-wishbone setup coupled with four-wheel discs. A rack-and-pinion steering system completes the performance package.

Four-wheel independent suspension and speed-sensing steering comes standard on all models of the 2000 Chrysler Sebring.

Safety

An anti-lock brake system remains optional for both models, and driver and passenger front airbags come standard on the 2000 Chrysler Sebring. The JX offers an anti-theft alarm system at an additional cost. Traction control provides an option for the JXi.

The NHTSA conducts a crash test study on the Sebring, and passenger and driver tests receive four out of five stars.

Identifix finds an occasional problem on the Sebring–failure of the exhaust gas recirculation valve. The transmission turbine speed sensor and the output shaft speed sensor also occasionally fail. On the convertible model, the blower motor resister occasionally fails.
