1999 Chrysler 300M Review

Aggressive, stylish, and powerful – this car is built to be loved.

The 1999 Chrysler 300M is a V-6 powered, front-drive sport sedan. It brought back its famous 300-series name with this new luxury sedan built on its Concorde and LHS platform. The 300 series was a line of high-end sport performance luxury automobiles produced by Chrysler between 1955 and 1965.

It was large, powerful, and just oozed style and coolness. While the new 300M isn’t a direct descendent of the original, it is fitting that this is the car chosen to carry on where the Chrysler letter series left off 40 years ago. The heart and soul of the 300 series lives on with this visual flashback to the luxury sport muscle cars of the American Graffiti era. The center grille and fin-like tail lamps definitely bring to mind the cars of Chrysler’s 300 series.

The car is classy, sophisticated, and more powerful than similar performance sedans like the BMW M3 or Buick Regal GS.

What’s New

The 1999 Chrysler 300M is brand new to the market. Like the series of automobiles it’s named after, it combines both power and style. Unlike the famed letter series from the 1950s and 1960s, it’s a four-door vehicle with plenty of European flare and attitude.


The 1999 Chrysler 300M has glimpses of its luxury muscle cars of yesterday but so is the manufacturer’s more recent cab forward design architecture and its winged medallion emblem. The car’s muscular look comes from its short, high, sharp-edged deck lid.

The 1999 Chrysler 300M share the same exterior style as the LHS and Concorde, but the new model is about 10 inches shorter in length than those vehicles. Chrysler designed the car to be a little over five meters in length to accommodate European buyers with smaller garages. The rear deck is also shorter. The rounded lines featured in the LHS and Concorde’s body styles have been replaced with sharp creases. The Chrysler 300M rides a 113-inch wheelbase on 17-inch tires.

The 300M has fully independent suspension and rack and pinion steering.


The 1999 Chrysler 300M and LHS share the same dashboard. A cluster of retro-inspired gauges sits directly to the front of the driver, well within eyesight and accessible reach. Further adding to the old time feel of the interior aesthetics is an analog clock in the center of the dashboard. Climate and audio controls are in the middle and are simple to operate.

A horizontal strip of faux wood trim accentuates the dashboard.

The 1999 Chrysler 300M is a five seat vehicle. It has two front bucket seats with seat heaters and leather upholstery. The backseat has less legroom than the cavernous LHS but is still sufficient enough for even the tallest of passengers. Trunk space is adequate and can be maximized when the backseat is folded down.

Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, a tachometer, tilt steering, steering wheel mounted controls, a power adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, and an AM/FM radio with a cassette and CD player. Options include a power sun/moon roof and 17-inch chrome wheels.

Performance Handling

The 1999 Chrysler 300M uses the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the Chrysler LHS. It generates 253 horsepower, 6400 rpm, and 255 lb-ft of torque. This is more than enough power to briskly move this 3567-pound vehicle.

The V-6 engine works with a four-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick. This is a dual mode transmission that allows the driver to choose between shifting manually and sitting back while the car does the shifting. This adds an element of fun to the driving experience and the transmission shifts promptly.

The power assisted rack and pinion steering provides excellent handling and a good road feel. Cornering is excellent, and the V-6 power is strong off the line. Engine noise can be a bit loud with acceleration.
