1997 Nissan Maxima questions and answers

Q: How much does it cost to replace struts on 1997 Nissan Maxima? Parts are fairly inexpensive.

A: you want to select a good struts – there are cheap ones, but you do get what you pay for. If you select good structs, and replace the mount, it would easily last another 100K miles. If not, you may end up replacing shruts every 10 – 30K miles.

Replacing structs takes about 4 hours of labor.

Q: How do you get the speaker covers off of the rear deck of a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

A: You dont. they are molded into the rear deck cover. If you are trying to remove the rear speakers this is how its done. http://www.vqpower.com/v2/articles.php?article_id=39 I know its a lot of work but if you try to get the grills off the rear deck you going to end up buying a new rear deck cover.

Q: How much does it cost to install keyless entry and alarm on a 1997 nissan maxima and where can i get it done?

A: Key less entry is really convenient but unless you plan on installing a nice stereo or whatever i wouldn’t worry about the alarm, i doubt a 11 year old car is at the top of the list of cars that get stolen. Unless you’re in an area that no car is safe no matter how old it is.

Q: Lost car keys with keyless entry remote. where can I get another one for a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

I already have a key made but I miss unlocking my car, and rolling down my windows before I get there. Also, what might be the prices?

A: You cooooould go to a dealership, but I recommend buying the actual remote or something off eBay / craigslist or somewhere similar and THEN going to the dealership to have them program it to save money. Their replacement remotes, just like anything else you purchase at a dealership, are typically way overpriced.

Q: WHERE is the knock sensor located on a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

Paste diagram if possible. Thank you!

A: Will is not correct. The knock sensor is located in the center of the engine under the intake. It is between both heads on the block.

If you look from the driver’s side under the intake you will see it, it has one bolt holding to the block. It has a small wiring harness going to it. About the size of a large olive.

Q: How many miles to the gallon do i get with a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

Thank you for your best estimate.

A: I used to get around 25mpg upto 30mpg in my 96 version. Even town driving was good.Great engines.

Q: How much should it cost to change the rear driverside quarter panel on a 1997 nissan maxima?

Looking to get a paint job and bodywork done for cheap, looking to spend around $1000 to $1200 and many body shops are saying it cost $1000 alone just to change the quarter panel. Just wondering if im getting ripped off. I live in NYC.

A: Quality paint body work isn’t cheap. I’d say that job will probably run close to $2400.00 to do it right.

Q: Nissan Maxima 1997 stalls when put in reverse?

I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima w/ automatic Transmission. When I put the car in reverse, the RPM’s drop and it stalls. Anyone have any idea why.

A: wiggle test harnesses under hood like air flow meter, look for visible chafing

Q: Should I buy a 1997 Nissan Maxima GLE?

I found a beautiful 1997 Nissan Maxima GLE that is in excellent condition. I can’t decide whether or not to purchase it because I want a vehicle that does not always need a lot of maintenance and repair. It has about 130,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else had good experiences with this car? Does the timing belt have to be replaced often?

A: Automatic transmission: The original automatic-transmission (model F04) shift solenoids allowed slipping and premature wear. (1997) Brake noise: Rear brakes rattle on rough road. (1995) Brake noise: Groaning from the rear brakes is caused by the parking brakes not fully releasing, requiring new brake cables and pads. (1995-99) Brake noise: Groaning from rear brakes at slow speeds may be due to binding parking brake cable. 1995-99) Clutch: The clutch may slip when accelerating hard in 4th or 5th gear due to a problem with the friction material. (1995) Engine knock: Spark knock or ping may result from a defective onboard computer. (1995-97) Engine noise: Noise from the front of the engine may be caused by excessive play in the timing chain for which a new tensioner and chain guide are required. (1995-96) Hard starting: Hard starting, stalling, or stumbling under load could be caused by corrosion of the coolant sensor. (1995-96) Hard starting: If the engine does not start on the first attempt, the engine may crank very slowly on the second attempt because of a problem with the engine-control computer. (1995) Rough idle: Several problems (no-start, no A/C, rough running, etc.) can be traced to broken wires in the engine compartment where the harness bends near the right strut tower. (1995-97) Rough idle: Rough running engine accompanied by check engine light may require revised powertrain control module. (1997) NHTSA Recall History 1997-98: One of the diodes in the alternator may be damaged and could fail, leading to an electrical short which could melt the plastic housing.

Q: Buy a new engine for a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima that is in good shape but the engine has over 200,000 miles on it. Is there a place where I can just buy a new engine or do I have to rebuild it? I would like to just keep the car cause it is paid off and just got over $1,500 in work done to the car and everything else works great.

A: Well Depending Why It Won’t Run. It May Or May Not Be Able To Be Rebuilt. Might As Well Go Thought The Tranny Too At The Same Time Look At About 3 To 4 Grand!

Q: 1997 nissan maxima car pulling to the right when stopping?

1997 nissan maxima car is pulling to the right when coming to a light or stop sign

A: Bad left front brake?

Q: Is premium gas required on a 1997 Nissan Maxima?

I want to buy a 1997 Nissan Maxima with about 76,000 miles on it. I have heard from a few people that this car requires premium gas. Is this true? Does it really make that big of a difference?

Why can’t I just put in regular gas?

A: High compression engines designed to run 91 octane will run better and get 2 to 3 more miles to a gallon of fuel all but wiping out the extra cost of the good stuff. Many 12 year old Maxima cars have knock sensor codes P0325 which won’t set a check engine light. However if the knock sensor is malfunctioning and the motor cannot adjust it self for lower octane engine damage may result.

You can run regular less power ping and spark knock. Or run premium fuel get almost 3 more miles to a gallon 18.5 gallon tank 55.5 more miles or about $ 4 dollars per tank savings. See? 30 cents more a gallon is $5.55 more per tank. So by using regular your spending $1.55 less per tank.

Not much savings really. I reccomend using the same gasoline from the same station too. (Shell) is what is in my tank.

Q: How do I program the 1997 Nissan Maxima ECM for the new mass air flow sensor I just installed?

I got P0174 on a 1997 Nissan Maxima (fuel system for bank 2 was too lean). I just installed a new mass air flow sensor but it’s choking the engine right now. The box came with the MAF sensor says to re-program the ECM (computer controlling the air flow).

How can I do that without going to the dealer? Thanks,

A: Did some idiot at Auto Zone tell you need a new Mass Air Flow sensor? That is the least likely problem although it could be but doubtful. It’s probably an O2 sensor in reality.

It could be an intake leak, the left O2 sensor (which is probably the real issue) low fuel pressure, bad injector or an exhaust leak before it’s a mass air flow sensor, however as I said it could be but I doubt it. The mass air flow sensor is placed in the stream of intake air. It measures the intake flow rate by measuring a part of the entire intake flow.

It consists of a hot film that is supplied with electric current from the ECM. The temperature of the hot film is controlled by the ECM a certain amount. The heat generated by the hot wire is reduced as the intake air flows around it.

The more air, the greater the heat loss. Therefore, the ECM must supply more electric current to the hot film as air flow increases. This maintains the temperature of the hot film.

The ECM detects the air flow by means of this current change. Driving the vehicle will help the ECM relearn the new sensor in most cases. You shouldn’t have to reprogram it.

It may be a bad sensor too by the way. Especially from Auto Zone
