Engines
Unlike the horizontally opposed flat-six engines found in Porsche’s iconic 911 model, the 944 uses a more conventional inline four-cylinder, available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged form. The engine displaces 2.5 liters and has a single overhead cam. With bore and stroke of 3.94 inches by 3.11 inches, the engine has eight valves and a 9.7-to-1 compression ratio.
Power output is 147 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 140 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. The Turbo’s engine is closely related, having the same basic specs save for its lower 8-to-1 compression ratio to compensate for the turbocharger’s boost. With the addition of the turbo, the 2.5-liter outputs 217 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 243 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm.
Exterior and Interior
The 944 resembles the previously released Porsche 924 and shares bits and pieces of that car’s exterior. The newer car can be easily distinguished by its wide body kit with prominent flared fenders. Exterior dimensions are 168.9 inches long, 68.3 inches wide and 50.2 inches tall. With the car’s 94.5-inch wheelbase, curb weight ranges from 2,965 pounds to 3,115 pounds depending on engine and transmission choices. The 944 has 15-inch wheels while the Turbo has 16-inch wheels.
Inside, there is seating for four, though with the car’s two-plus-two configuration, the rear seats are best for children or for very short trips. Far ahead of its time in 1986, the 944 featured air bags for both the driver and passenger.
