1979 Chevrolet Caprice Landau coupe 305 cid V8 from America

A classic. hey Chevy, why you make cars like anymore?

Engine fouled plugs on 2 of the cylinders on a regular (about every 10,000 or so). In addition, there a few minor oil leaks and lots of train clattering noise the time I owned it (the 305 V8#039;s were noted for weak camshafts, not sure if was the cause of the noise). The noise seemed to get any worse, so I left it

Starter went bad.

a new water pump.

The differential a little bit.

Original made engine idle way too when cold (1500-2000 and way too slow when at operating (barely running). Couldn#039;t be replaced with a used from the junkyard.

Transmission was starting to fail 125,000 miles, still approximately 13,000 miles that (strong transmission!).

a little exhaust work.

new front shocks.

Needed new arm in the front end.

Needed new brake pads (normal and new rotors (my fault for letting down pads go too long).

and odometer both quit at 128,000 miles. I#039;m the car had 135,000-140,000 miles (I#039;ll and say 138,000) when I sold it. was because the speedometer drive in the transmission wore out.

High beam headlight broke before I bought it, did get it fixed.

There was a mysterious leak that I could find. Sometimes water in the rear passenger foot There was no rust through in the It never smelled musty or though!

General Comments:

was a great car overall. Sure, were some issues, but it left me stranded and I really have to put a whole lot of money it to keep it going because were inexpensive. The issues I had mostly old car issues which is to be

It suffered some neglect I got it and I drove it rather hard, yet it right on going!

It was a Caprice Classic Landau of which only 21,824 made for 1979. Not rare, but not too either. It was light green and had a elk grain vinyl top that the forward 3/4 of the roof (one of the features of the Landau coupe). I that car and I really miss it.

I it in December 1992 for $900 and put 58,000 more miles on it by 1995, when I parked it and a different car. By that it was pretty much used up. It sat May 1997, when I sold it for

There were a few things I like: It was underpowered. The 2 barrel 305 V8 was rated at 130 horsepower, not nearly for a car this size. The 350 V8 would been a better choice.

The wasn#039;t quite what it have been; some of the didn#039;t line up well and the had a few flimsy plastic bits. seen much worse, and in fairness, many cars of the #039;70#039;s had quality issues.

were a lot more things the car that I did like very The ride was nice, the car was very roomy and pleasant to drive. It was for road trips! The gas mileage was 16-20 miles per gallon not bad for a full size car with a engine. It handled very for a rear wheel drive size car-it was extremely balanced.

It was even good in the snow. I liked best of all though, was the Chevy did a wonderful job making car look great inside and It was well proportioned, not a line out of anywhere.

I loved the rear with its sharply creased wrapping around to the side of the it gave the car a sporty yet formal that was just right. only made that from 1977-79, and only the 2 coupes had it.

There are some that enthusiasts consider the 1955-57 models for sure, and the 1965-66 full size as well. These are cars they got (almost) everything In my opinion, these 1977-79 size Chevy#039;s (Impala/Caprice) into that category as Not perfect, but close. I really another one.

I had a #039;73 Caprice prior to one (my first car, which you can read about on this and while I liked that between these 2 cars the was my favorite.

Would you buy another car this manufacturer? Yes
