125 bhp, 255 cu. in. flathead V8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live axle rear suspension with leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase 118

In 1953, Mercury shared the Lincoln look but its five-inch shorter wheelbase and shorter overhangs made Mercury ’ s overall package a foot smaller than the Lincoln. In fact, the Mercury body shell was lifted directly from Ford, with the three-inch longer wheelbase reflected in the hood and front fenders.

1953 marked the final year for the venerable flathead V8 in both Ford and Mercury, the ultimate statement of one of the most famous, successful and celebrated internal combustion engines ever created. The final version is considered the ultimate, and many have been “ liberated ” by enthusiasts to power a variety of rods, customs, and other automotive wonders.

The compact Mercury Monterey convertible neatly fit the market gap between the more modest Ford and big, luxurious Lincoln. Its 125-horsepower V8 gave excellent performance while the larger and more luxuriously trimmed body appealed to a more demanding market. Available only in the upscale Monterey series, 8,463 were built.

Mercury Monterey

Astonishingly rare, they accounted for less than three percent of Mercury production, and only about one-fifth of the production of Ford ’ s Sunliner. Survivors are rare, and they are avidly sought after by collectors today. It is interesting to note that one particular 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible also marked an important milestone in the history of the Ford Motor Company: it was the 40,000,000th vehicle built by Ford.

The example offered here has been well restored. Paint, chrome, and upholstery are all very good, although some indications of road use and patina are evident. Finished in metallic gray with two-tone gray leather interior and a black cloth top, its flathead V8 drives through the Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission.

The car is well- equipped with skirts, radio, heater, wide whitewalls, full wheel covers, driving lights, and dual exhaust.

There is perhaps no more recognizable sound in the automotive world than a flathead Mercury running dual exhausts – a sound that was magically enhanced in a convertible with the top down. It is the sound of a generation, and evokes memories of drive-in restaurants, hamburgers and milkshakes. It has become an icon of popular culture, even to the generations that came after it.

Please note that the serial number for this car is 53LA34375M.
